Aug 30, 2026 – Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Fr. Bob McCabe is the pastor of the Church of the Divine Child and has been a priest for over 30 years. Before going to Divine Child in 2019, he was pastor of St. Pius X Parish in Southgate, where he led their church and school community for 11 years. Prior to entering the seminary in 1989, he was a parishioner of our parish Sacred Heart Catholic Church for nearly 13 years. Upon his ordination in 1995, Fr. Bob celebrated his first Mass of Thanksgiving at Sacred Heart! He is also an avid and talented photographer, so you might see him around the city taking pictures. He is a music lover like me, and we have had many conversations about the Beatles and other favorite bands of his. 

Fr. Ryan Asher went to Divine Child as an associate pastor in July 2025. He grew up in Plymouth. Both of his parents worked for Ford for over 20 years, so he has a strong connection to Dearborn. Fr. Ryan attended grade school at Our Lady of Good Counsel and then went to U of D Jesuit for High School (Class of 2014). He then attended Hillsdale College (Class of 2018), where he majored in math. His time and experience there led him to apply to seminary. After his first 2 years at Sacred Heart Major Seminary, he was asked by the archbishop to finish his studies in Rome. After four years in Rome, he was ordained a priest on May 18th, 2024. Since I was vocation director at that time, I was honored to be at his diaconate ordination the year before at St. Peter’s Basilica. After a short summer back in the US, he went back to Rome to finish his STL degree in “Patristic Theology,” the early Church Fathers. An STL degree is a Pontifical Degree which is equivalent to one step below a Doctorate but higher than a Masters in the US system. The guy is smart! He also loves music and we had many debates about different bands. 

Fr. Dan Whalen was just ordained on May 23rd, 2026. He is the youngest priest in the archdiocese at 26 years old. Fun fact, he almost had to get special permission to be ordained at age 25, the youngest someone can be ordained a priest. He grew up in West Bloomfield with two brothers and one sister. As a family they went to Our Lady of Refuge in Orchard Lake for Mass which was also his grade school. Then he entered Orchard Lake St. Mary’s for High School and graduated in 2018. He was on the row team and is quite athletic. After High School he immediately entered Sacred Heart Major Seminary. He is an all-around great person and usually has a smile on his face. At the seminary he was cast in many of the plays that were put on and run by the seminarians. Together let us thank these selfless men for taking on an extra Mass for us which allows us to have the many Masses we have on the weekend. I know these priests are holy and hard-working men that do so incredibly much. Again, what a blessing it is that they would agree to help us like they are doing. Please keep them in your prayers!
